AUSTIN ⎯ The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded Lee College a $148,670 Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grant. The grant will help the district purchase and install a simulation system to provide students with training for careers in truck driving.

“The JET program is one of several initiatives administered by TWC that helps students succeed and our economy grow,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Julian Alvarez. “I applaud the inspirational work Lee College is doing here. By providing their students with the opportunity to learn a skill, they are strengthening our future workforce and ensuring that a historically underrepresented population has a clear pathway to good paying jobs and fulfilling careers.”

The Jobs and Education for Texans grant program allocates $10 million each biennium to defray start-up costs associated with the development of career and technical education programs to public community and technical colleges, and independent school districts. Equipment funded through JET grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations.

In 2018, TWC awarded 23 grants totaling $4,998,000 to public community and technical colleges and independent school districts for programs that focus on supporting new, emerging industries or high-demand occupations through the JET grant program.

Eligible educational institutions can apply for the next phase of JET funding through a competitive grant process. TWC has issued a Request for Applications solicitation that provides information and instruction on how to submit a proposal packet. Go to the JET Grant Program webpage to access the Request for Applications solicitation.
