“We Hire Vets” employer recognition program encourages more Texas employers to hire veterans

Austin ⎯ The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), partnering with the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) and Texas Workforce Solutions Offices, recognized Southwest Airlines for participating in the “We Hire Vets” employer recognition program for their efforts in hiring our nation’s heroes.

Through this program, employers whose workforce is composed of at least 10 percent military veterans are eligible to receive a “We Hire Vets” employer recognition decal.

“Veterans bring a level of leadership, integrity and honor to a company that will strengthen any business,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. “Southwest Airlines has made a commitment to hiring veterans, and it is important that we recognize employers who have veteran-friendly hiring practices.”

Thus far in 2017, Southwest Airlines has hired more than 300 veterans for various positions throughout the company, including pilots, flight attendants, and ramp and customer service agents. Southwest Airlines proudly employs more than 7,500 veterans throughout their company, representing all branches of the military.

“The Texas Veterans Commission recognizes companies for focusing on veteran employment,” says Thomas Palladino, TVC Executive Director. “Because hiring veterans is not good will, it’s good for business.”

"Southwest Airlines is honored to be recognized by We Hire Vets for our commitment to hiring veterans,” said Julie Weber, Vice President People. “We like to say that although our colors are red, yellow, and blue, our hearts beat for the red, white, and blue. It’s a privilege to work alongside those who have devoted themselves to serving our country.”

Employing veterans creates a dedicated workforce with employees who know how to lead, build teams, and accept and meet challenges. Recognition of employers with veteran-friendly hiring practices is an important aspect of the Texas Operation Welcome Home initiative that assists recently separated veterans with employment and training opportunities.
