This FAQ explains why you may have received a letter from the Texas Workforce Commission about your 2020 IRS Form 1099-G.
On this page:
According to Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) records, you filed a claim and received unemployment benefits in 2020.
Your claim subsequently was flagged for identity verification and your identity could not be verified.
Since we were unable to verify your identity in 2020, we did not mail you a Form 1099-G showing the unemployment benefits paid to you. In addition, we were not able to send the information to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Now that your identity has been verified, TWC is required to mail you the Form 1099-G showing the amount of unemployment benefits paid to you in 2020 and report that information to the IRS.
A corrected 2020 Form 1099-G is being sent by U.S. Postal Service to your address on file, even if you are signed up for electronic correspondence.
Please contact TWC through our Contact Request Form.
We advise you to contact the IRS or your tax preparer for information regarding the need to file an amended tax return.
Per the IRS, for tax year 2020, the first $10,200 of unemployment compensation was not taxable for most households.

Reminder: TWC staff are not tax experts and cannot advise you regarding tax filing.
Form 1099-G is not an appealable document. TWC must report the total amount of benefits to the IRS by law.
You may review your Payment History by logging on to Unemployment Benefit Services for a list of payments.
If you refunded an overpayment during the calendar year, you may report the repaid amount on your tax return. TWC cannot change the 1099-G, because the total amount of benefits paid is correct.
Even if you did not verify your identity, because you filed a claim for unemployment benefits in 2020, a Form 1099-G is being sent to you as required by law.
If you used the amount that is shown on our Unemployment Benefit Services system to file your taxes in 2020, you can compare the amount that displays on the Corrected Form 1099-G to the amount you reported on your 2020 tax return to determine if the amounts are the same. If the amounts are different, the amount on the Form 1099-G is the correct amount of benefits issued.
