Overview

TWC pays unemployment benefits to individuals who are unemployed through no fault of their own, are actively seeking work, and meet all ongoing eligibility requirements established by state and federal law. Prevention, detection, and elimination of fraud, waste, and abuse of the unemployment benefits program are top priorities, ensuring that benefits are paid exclusively to those who meet the eligibility requirements.

The prosecutions described below are for individuals who filed a valid claim and were found to have committed fraud by providing false information regarding work and earnings when requesting payment of unemployment benefits. We regularly cross match benefit claims with employer wage reports and other databases to detect possible fraud. When fraud is detected, we work with local and federal agencies and district attorney offices to prosecute those who try to cheat the system by failing to properly report their work and earnings.

We work with local, state, and federal partners to prosecute unemployment identity fraud, however, as these cases are typically tied to larger schemes and sensitive information, the data is not reported here.
