Several events scheduled for National Fair Housing Month in April
AUSTIN – On March 4, 2019, Texas Governor Greg Abbott proclaimed April 2019 to be Fair Housing Month. The Texas Workforce Commission Civil Rights Division (TWCCRD) joins in celebrating more than 50 years of Fair Housing Act enforcement. The federal Act and its state counterpart, the Texas Fair Housing Act, prohibit discrimination in housing based on disability, race, color, religion, national origin, sex, and familial status.
“The Texas Workforce Commission is honored to join the Governor’s Office and other state agencies in celebrating Fair Housing Month,” said TWC Chair and Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. “It is important that a person’s right to housing options, without bias, be protected. Equal access to housing ensures that Texas remains one of the best places to live and work.”
TWCCRD has partnered with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) to present a joint “Fair Housing Overview” webinar training event on Tuesday, April 9 from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. in honor of National Fair Housing Month. Attendees will learn the basics about fair housing in Texas; how to apply information in a review of potential scenarios; and the fundamentals about the reasonable accommodation process.
“Events like the Fair Housing Overview are essential to ensuring every Texan has access to housing regardless of their disability, race, color, religion, national origin, sex, and familial status,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Julian Alvarez. “Programs like this help create peace of mind for workers and foster communities.”
TWC urges all Texans to work together for fair housing. Learn more information about your rights as a consumer or your responsibilities as a housing provider on the civil rights discrimination website.
