Apprenticeship is a type of training that helps people get ready for skilled jobs. In apprenticeship programs, individuals get paid while you work and learn on the job from experienced workers. Individuals also attend classes that relate to their job to learn even more. These programs usually take about one to five years to complete, following the rules set by the industry.
Apprenticeships give individuals an education that is focused on practical skills, which can lead to well-paying jobs. Companies also use these programs to find and keep talented workers with high skills.
Accepting Applications
TWC invites eligible grant applicants to apply for funding to support industry-recognized apprenticeship programs. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications by June 1, to ensure funding for the current state fiscal year.
Funding Opportunities
The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) supports several apprenticeship funding opportunities.
TWC has set aside $4 million to support apprenticeships in middle skills careers. This money is to help employers who are creating or already using Registered Apprenticeship (RA) programs to train their workers. The funding is available for businesses in different parts of the state.
Funding is available through Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and Apprenticeship Expansion federal grant funds. Individual awards may not exceed $500.000. Funds are available on a first-come first-serve basis, until approved funding has been exhausted.

TWC has set aside $15 million to help the healthcare industry. This money is to help create more chances for registered nurses and other healthcare professionals to become apprentices and grow their careers in the state.
Funding is available through Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and Apprenticeship Expansion federal grant funds. Individual awards may not exceed $1,000,000. Funds are available on a first-come first-serve basis, until approved funding has been exhausted.

Some employers can get a refund on their state taxes of up to $2,500 for each apprentice who is part of a qualifying apprenticeship and has earned wages for at least seven months in a year.

Apprenticeship Expansion federal grant funds build on TWC’s previous and ongoing efforts to expand and modernize RA programs by increasing the number of programs and apprentices, diversifying the industries that utilize RA, and bridge access for underrepresented populations and underserved communities.
Eligible grantees include:
- Local Workforce Development Boards
- Community and Technical Colleges
- Education Service Centers
Eligible grantees can apply for Apprenticeship Expansion funding through a competitive grant opportunity.
TWC grants money to support classroom instruction in RA programs. Apprenticeship programs work with a local education agency (LEA) or their own apprenticeship committee to help manage the funds. The LEA and the apprenticeship committee are the link between the program and TWC.
Application window begins in June each year, with a grant period of September 1 through August 31st.

TWC awards funding to Nonprofit Organizations that provide recruitment and assisted services to facilitate the participation of Military Veteran's and Transitioning Military Service Member's entry into RA programs in Texas.
Funding amount available each fiscal year is $300,000. Individual awards may not exceed $150,000. Grant period typically lasts 12 months.
Nonprofit organizations can apply for Transitioning Veterans to Apprenticeship funding through a competitive grant opportunity.

TWC grants money to address Texas' immediate industrial workforce needs resulting from the impact of hurricanes, other natural disasters, and overall workforce shortages. This money is to encourage the private sector to develop specialized apprenticeships in Texas, resulting in wages equal to or greater than the mid-level status of and attainment of industry credentials in the related occupation.
Individual awards may not exceed $500,000. Funding is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications by June 1, to ensure funding for the current state fiscal year.

Texas Industry Recognized Apprenticeship is administered by the Texas Workforce Commission. The program is funded by appropriations from the Texas Legislature. The program is governed by the following rules and regulations:
TWC grants money to support preparatory instruction to prepare individuals to enter and succeed in RA programs. Quality pre-apprenticeships must have documented partnerships with at least one RA program that allows participants to enter directly into a RA program. The LEA and the apprenticeship committee are the link between the pre-apprenticeship and TWC.
Funding will support preparatory instruction classes that consist of instruction lasting six months or less that teach the basic skills required for an individual to comply with the terms of the individual's apprenticeship agreement.
Application window begins in June each year, with a grant period of September 1 through August 31.
