One of Texas Workforce Commission's (TWC) highest priorities is to prevent, detect and end unemployment benefits fraud. A person must meet all state and federal requirements to get benefits.

The cases below are for people who filed a valid claim that turned out to be fraudulent. This is because they did not report their work and earnings correctly. TWC checks information people give with other records to detect possible fraud. We work with government agencies and court systems to prosecute people who commit fraud. TWC works with local, state and federal partners to prosecute unemployment identity (ID) fraud. The following cases do not include that data, because they involve larger schemes and sensitive information.

During 2023, TWC learned the details of the following criminal prosecutions related to unemployment benefits fraud. In addition to the cases noted below, other individuals were indicted on charges relating to fraud or theft of unemployment benefits but were allowed to make restitution of the amount in exchange for a dismissal of charges.
